ACUDETOX: Acupuncture for Substance Abuse and Detoxification

Currently, I am the Supervising Acupuncturist for Acupuncture Detoxification Technicians (ADTs) in the community. These specialists are trained to needle five specific points in the ear known as the NADA protocol. NADA, or National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (, promotes the application of this auricular protocol for individuals undergoing withdrawal from opiates, alcohol and other addictive substances. Needling these points in the ear helps with cravings, anxiety, insomnia and mood imbalances.

This protocol has been applied not only within recovery settings but also offered for individuals with trauma from natural disasters (survivors of earthquakes and floods) and military service (PTSD).

As part of the wave of integrative medicine -- bringing holistic health practices into the fold of mental healthcare services -- I have been facilitating a Stress Reduction/Acudetox group with the Counseling Center of Addison County in Middlebury since May, 2014.

In addition, the Howard Center and the Turning Point Center in Burlington currently offer Acudetox services for clients.

To maintain their certification in the State of Vermont, ADTs require the periodic supervision of a licensed acupuncturist. I am pleased to work with the ADT community and support the integration of Acudetox throughout the state.
